Iraq opens the import of tomato crop in a quantitative measure and for a limited period

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqs agriculture ministry said on Monday it would open imports to tomatoes but in regulated quantities.

Ministry spokesman Hamid Al-Nayef said in a statement today that the approval was obtained to open the import of tomato crop from all the border outlets in limited quantities for a limited period as of 14/10/2019.

He added that the conquest came as a result of the arrival of millions of visitors from outside Iraq to perform the Arbainiyya (Imam Hussein) ceremony and due to the large number of Husseinian processions, which serve the visitors, which requires the consumption of large quantities of tomato crop and in order not to affect the local consumer and fear of high prices The decision to open the import in a quantified quantity of this crop for a limited period until the end of the 40th visit decrees.
